The most frequently cited definition is from the United Nations World Commission on Environment and Development: "sustainable development is the development that fulfills the demands of the present without compromising future generations' ability to meet their own needs."

Sustainability is defined in the UCLA Sustainability Committee's charter as "the combination of environmental health, social fairness, and sustainable economy in order to produce vibrant, healthy, diversified, and sustainable communities for this generation and future generations." Sustainability practice acknowledges how these challenges are interrelated and necessitate a systems perspective as well as an understanding of complexity."

Sustainable practices promote the health and vitality of the environment, people, and the economy. Sustainability assumes that resources are finite and should be utilized cautiously and wisely in light of long-term priorities and the consequences of resource usage. Sustainability is concerned with our children and grandchildren and the planet we will leave them in its most basic form.

The sustainability trend is based on the protection of our environment and its supplies. It is now part of a worldwide effort to conserve the environment while also ensuring a future for the next generations. While sustainability was introduced more than two decades ago, it is still in its early stages. The authentic implementation of sustainability is much wider and goes much deeper, especially for businesses. Society is demanding that businesses become good corporate citizens, and many customers are supporting such decisions with their money. They assist companies devoted to sustainability by purchasing their products, campaigning for them, and donating to them.

The concept of becoming or going green inspired the concept of business sustainability. Some industries have been pushed to adapt how their operations and products harm the environment and their consumers as a result of outside pressure from community special interest groups and in an effort to fulfill new regulatory requirements. While first hesitant, early adopters saw the enormous impact of corporate sustainability on the ecosystem and their financial line. Early adopters have witnessed a significant increase in profitability, customer happiness, stakeholder benefits, and stakeholder engagement as a result of their corporate sustainability activities.
